Andreas Kling is a Swedish software developer widely recognized for his work in building independent, community-driven operating systems and web browsers. Born in 1985, Kling gained prominent attention in the open-source community through his transparent coding style, live streams, and ambitious projects that challenge modern tech monopolies.

SerenityOS: Building from Scratch

In 2018, Kling began working on SerenityOS, a retro-styled Unix-like operating system built entirely from scratch. What initially started as a personal coding project to keep himself occupied evolved into a massive collaborative effort involving hundreds of developers worldwide.

The operating system was designed with a distinct aesthetic reminiscent of 1990s productivity software, coupled with modern underpinnings. Kling documented much of the development process through regular coding videos and monthly updates on YouTube, cultivating a dedicated community of contributors and enthusiasts. In 2021, he transitioned to working on his open-source projects full-time, supported by community sponsorships and donations.

The Ladybird Browser Initiative

Building upon components originally conceptualized within SerenityOS, Kling turned his focus toward the web—an area dominated by a small handful of rendering engine duopolies. He initiated Ladybird, an independent web browser and rendering engine built completely from scratch rather than being a fork of existing projects like Chromium or WebKit.

Ladybird is developed under a non-profit initiative funded through public donations and sponsorships from tech figures and organizations. The project aims to provide a fast, standards-compliant, and alternative web browsing experience free from commercial advertising incentives or corporate mandates. Under Kling’s leadership, the project has expanded into a cross-platform effort involving a growing team of engineers working in the open.
