Z is for Zero Release Date: The Mystery of the Final Missing Book

If you have been searching online for the release date of Z is for Zero, you are looking for a book that will never hit the shelves.

For fans of mystery fiction, Z is for Zero represents one of the most famous literary puzzles in modern publishing: the final, unwritten installment of Sue Grafton’s beloved “Alphabet Mystery” series.

The End of the Alphabet

Beginning in 1982 with A is for Alibi, author Sue Grafton captivated readers worldwide with her gritty, independent private investigator, Kinsey Millhone, operating out of the fictional town of Santa Teresa, California (loosely based on Santa Barbara). For over three decades, Grafton published a new book matching each successive letter of the alphabet.

By the time Y is for Yesterday was published in 2017, readers were eagerly anticipating the grand finale: Z is for Zero, which had initially been placeholder-scheduled for a fall 2019 release.

Why There Is No Release Date

Tragically, Sue Grafton passed away in December 2017 at the age of 77, following a private battle with cancer, before she ever began writing the final book.

While many successful book franchises are routinely handed over to ghostwriters or co-authors after an original creator passes away, Grafton made her wishes explicitly clear during her lifetime. She fiercely protected her work, refusing to sell the film or television rights to the Kinsey Millhone series, and she left strict instructions regarding its conclusion.

Shortly after her passing, her family released a definitive statement to her fans:

“Because of all of those things, and out of the deep abiding love and respect for our dear sweet Sue, as far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y.”

A Fittingly Unfinished Legacy

Because Grafton never allowed anyone else to script Kinsey Millhone’s adventures, Z is for Zero remains permanently unwritten.

Though it can be frustrating for readers who love tidy conclusions, there is a certain poetic justice to leaving the series one letter short. For a legendary mystery writer, leaving behind one final, eternal puzzle means that Kinsey Millhone’s investigations will technically never truly come to a close.
