Beyond “Gangnam Style”: Does PSY Still Make Music?

It has been over a decade since Park Jae-sang—better known to the world as PSY—performed an invisible horse-riding dance that changed internet history forever. “Gangnam Style,” released in 2012, became the first YouTube video to hit one billion views, turning PSY into an overnight global pop-culture phenomenon.

Given the astronomical scale of that viral wildfire, it is easy to view PSY as a one-hit wonder frozen in time. But the reality is far more dynamic. Yes, PSY still makes music, though his role in the global entertainment ecosystem has evolved significantly.

From Global Megastar to Label Mogul

While PSY hasn’t stopped releasing music, his professional focus shifted dramatically behind the scenes. In 2019, following his departure from his longtime home YG Entertainment, PSY founded his own talent agency and record label, P Nation.

Through P Nation, PSY transitioned from being solely a wacky chart-topping soloist to a kingmaker in the K-pop industry. He has used his decades of experience to sign, mentor, and shape the careers of prominent South Korean artists—including powerhouse soloists like Jessi, Hwasa, and Crush. Rather than stepping away from the studio, he positioned himself at the center of it, acting as both an active artist and a master executive.

His Recent Musical Comeback

If you assumed PSY retired after his early 2010s Western crossover attempts (“Gentleman” and “Hangover”), his return to the charts proved otherwise.

In April 2022, PSY dropped his ninth full-length studio album, aptly titled PSY 9th. The record proved that he hadn’t lost his ear for massive hooks or his knack for high-profile collaborations. The lead single, “That That,” was co-written, produced, and featured Suga of BTS. The track blended PSY’s signature high-energy comedic flair with modern K-pop production, instantly dominating global charts and racking up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube.

The album also featured a star-studded lineup of collaborations with other contemporary giants, including:

  • Zico (on the track “Celeb”)
  • Heize
  • Crush
  • Tablo of Epik High

The Legendary “Summer Swag” Concerts

Even when he isn’t dropping new studio albums, PSY’s presence in the music world remains loud, physical, and massive through his live performances.
