How to Add Your Own Music and Sounds to Spotify
Have you ever wanted to listen to an unreleased track, a custom mashup, or your own original music alongside your favorite mainstream hits? While Spotify’s massive public catalog has millions of songs, the platform also lets you import your own custom audio files using a built-in feature called Local Files.
Whether you want them on your computer or synced to your phone, here is how you can seamlessly add your own sounds to Spotify.
Step 1: Prep Your Audio Files
Before diving into Spotify settings, make sure your files are ready to go. Spotify is specific about what it can and cannot play:
- Supported Formats: MP3, MP4, and M4P files work best. Note that M4A files or video-heavy MP4s may not process correctly.
- File Organization: Create a dedicated folder on your computer (for example, named “Spotify Imports”) and place your audio tracks inside. Keep the file names clean and simple without strange symbols or complex coding.
Step 2: Enable Local Files on Desktop
The easiest way to import files is through the Spotify desktop app (Windows or Mac), which acts as the hub for managing your custom audio.
- Open the Spotify desktop application and click on your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
- Toggle the switch next to Show Local Files to the On position.
- Click Add a Source and select the folder where you saved your custom audio tracks in Step 1.
Once completed, a new folder named Local Files will appear in your Spotify Library on desktop, containing all your custom sounds.
Step 3: Add Your Sounds to Playlists
Now that your audio files are inside Spotify, you can treat them just like regular tracks:
- Go to your Local Files folder.
- Create a new playlist or open an existing personal playlist.
- Drag and drop your local tracks into the playlist, or right-click them to add them to a playlist of your choice.
Step 4: Sync Your Custom Sounds to Your Phone
If you want to listen to your custom audio files on your mobile device (iOS or Android), follow these quick syncing steps:
- On Mobile: Open Spotify, go to your Settings and privacy, tap Apps and devices, and toggle on Local audio files (make sure to grant Spotify the necessary permissions to access storage/media).
- On Desktop: Ensure your computer and your phone are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network and logged into the same Spotify account.
- Open the playlist on your desktop that contains your local files, then open that same playlist on your mobile phone and tap the Download button.
Spotify will securely transfer the files over your local network, letting you stream your custom audio right from your phone.
Alternative: Publishing Music Globally
If you are an independent artist looking to officially upload your music so that anyone on Spotify can search for it and stream it worldwide, the Local Files feature won’t work for public distribution. Instead, you will need to upload your audio through a music distribution service (such as DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby), which will deliver your tracks, album art, and metadata directly to Spotify’s public database.
