How to Handle Video Rotation in Google Vids: A Practical Guide

Google Vids has quickly become a go-to tool for workplace storytelling, team updates, and marketing pitches. Part of the Google Workspace ecosystem, it pairs cloud collaboration with AI-assisted creation, making it effortless to whip up polished presentations.

However, if you’ve ever uploaded a sideways or upside-down clip into your project, you might have run into a sudden workflow roadblock. Can you actually rotate a video in Google Vids?

The Short Answer: Native Rotation Isn’t Available for Videos

As of right now, Google Vids does not feature a native, direct tool to rotate or flip video clips.

While Google Vids allows you to rotate images, text boxes, and shapes using rotation handles, video elements behave differently on the canvas. If you click on a video clip and check its Format options, you will find controls for sizing, positioning, volume, and playback timing, but the rotation handle is noticeably absent for video files.

Don’t panic—this doesn’t mean your sideways clip has to ruin your presentation. You just need to prep your footage before bringing it into your timeline.

Workarounds: How to Fix Your Video Orientation

Since Google Vids won’t let you tilt a video on the canvas, use one of these simple workarounds to get your project looking right:

1. Rotate the Video Before Uploading (Recommended)

The cleanest method is to fix the orientation on your device or via a quick editing tool before importing it into Google Vids.

  • On Windows: Open the video in the default Photos app, click the Edit/Crop icon, use the rotate button until it’s oriented correctly, and save your file.
  • On Mac: Open the video in QuickTime Player or Photos, navigate to the edit or menu options to rotate the clip left or right, and save.
  • On Mobile: If you shot the video on your phone, use your built-in photo gallery app to rotate it upright before transferring it to your computer.

2. Adjust Your Project’s Aspect Ratio

Sometimes, what feels like a “rotation” issue is actually a framing mismatch—such as trying to fit vertical smartphone footage into a horizontal landscape template, or vice versa.

While you can’t rotate individual video blocks, you can change the overall canvas orientation of your project in your settings:

  • Widescreen (16:9) for standard presentations.
  • Vertical (9:16) for mobile-first content.
  • Square (1:1) for social feeds.

Checking your overall project specifications early on can help prevent awkward cropping, even if it doesn’t replace a true 90-degree clip rotation.

Looking Ahead

Google Workspace tools receive updates continuously, and user feedback heavily drives what features make it into newer apps like Google Vids. While direct video rotation isn’t supported yet, Google may incorporate more advanced on-canvas video editing capabilities in future rollouts.

For now, a quick pre-edit rotation on your local device will ensure your Google Vids presentation stays professional, seamless, and completely upright!
