Before the Spotlight: The Early Life, Artistic Roots, and Pre-Debut Journey of Song Kang
Long before he earned the title of the “Son of Netflix” and captivated global audiences in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just an ordinary young man navigating teenage uncertainties, exploring different career paths, and figuring out his place in the world.
While his pre-debut history is often overshadowed by his rapid rise to Hallyu stardom, the chapters of his life before stepping onto the screen offer a fascinating look at the discipline, doubts, and inspirations that shaped him.
A Creatively Rich Household
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song grew up in an environment naturally infused with physical discipline and the arts. His father worked as an artistic gymnast, instilling an early appreciation for body coordination and fitness that would later aid him in handling demanding, action-heavy roles. Meanwhile, his mother worked as a piano teacher, introducing him to classical expression and rhythm from childhood.
Despite growing up surrounded by artistic influences, Song’s early ambitions did not immediately point toward acting. During his school years at Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School, he was a typical teenager who enjoyed sports, outdoor activities, and spending time with friends. He even spent a period heavily leaning toward other creative fields, briefly considering a future in architecture and interior furniture design.
The Road Not Taken: Turning Down Idol Scouts
Because of his striking, clean-cut visuals—frequently celebrated by fans today who unearth his spotless student yearbook photos—Song did not go entirely unnoticed during his youth. He was approached multiple times by various K-pop talent agencies looking to scout him for idol groups.
However, Song ultimately declined these opportunities. With characteristic candor, he later admitted that he turned down the offers because he felt he lacked the natural inclination or talent for singing and dancing, preferring to seek a path that aligned better with his personal strengths.
The Cinematic Spark and Overcoming Shyness
The turning point for Song’s career ambitions came from the silver screen rather than the music stage. After watching Leonardo DiCaprio deliver a powerhouse performance in Titanic, Song experienced a profound shift in perspective, setting his sights firmly on a career in acting.
Transitioning toward the profession wasn’t without its hurdles. Naturally introverted and hesitant, he initially faced reservations close to home. When he first expressed his desire to act, his mother questioned the choice, gently suggesting he look into a more practical trade given his quiet demeanor. Fortunately, his father offered crucial encouragement, telling him to pursue whatever brought him genuine fulfillment.
Stepping into formal acting classes proved daunting at first. Song has candidly recalled feeling intensely embarrassed during early exercises, frequently laughing out loud in front of peers and questioning whether he had the outgoing nature required for the craft. Through persistence, he pushed past the awkward phase, eventually enrolling in Konkuk University’s prestigious Department of Film Arts to ground his ambitions in formal education.
Transitioning to the Screen
Armed with an academic foundation in film arts and a newly forged resilience, Song signed with Namoo Actors. In 2017, he officially stepped into the entertainment industry with a supporting role in the tvN romance series The Liar and His Lover.
Looking back, Song Kang’s pre-debut years reveal an actor built on patience, gradual self-discovery, and quiet determination rather than an overnight stroke of luck. Those formative years of uncertainty and training ultimately laid the groundwork for the powerhouse performer he is today.
